The Use of Poetry/Songs in Teaching/Learning English
According to my personal perspective, teaching English is quite challenging to make
attractive activities so as to create the atmosphere to make the learners not feel boredom.
Song and poetry are useful tools and fun activities to teach the language. The main purpose of
learning English with songs is to make the students learn by listening, repeat and to develop
communication skills. When properly planned, applied, and evaluated, a song has the
potential to increase memory, understanding the essence of the story of the music and to get a
new vocabulary more effectively and language structures. However poetry is a written art that
contains aesthetics language, and beautiful words with deep meaning. The ability to analyze
poetry can help students to create and convey their thoughts (critical thinking). The task of
finding an object to use as a source of inspiration for poetry writing the students can
participate in this writing exercise by using both inside and outside of the classroom for
inspiration the object is instructed at this level to be perceptive and receptive to both living
and nonliving things around them. Mittal (2014) explains that poetry offers many
opportunities for language teaching and practice. It gives a wide change of learning
vocabulary and structure.
